The legend of Saint Theodora
The story of Saint Theodora makes this small chapel even more special. According to tradition, Theodora was a young girl who, in order to help her poor family, disguised herself as a man and lived under the name Theodore. Despite her kindness, she was wrongly accused of a crime she did not commit and was put to death without ever revealing who she really was.
Shortly before his martyrdom, it is said that he prayed, saying:
«"My body to "May my hair become a church, my trees and my blood water, to water them."»
And thus the legend of Saint Theodora in Vasta was born, with the 17 trees still rising above the roof of the small church today, creating one of the most special and mysterious landscapes in Greece.
Distance from Andritsaina: 45 km.
