Castle Araclovo

The Castle Araclovo, or otherwise known as the Castle of Albaina, is located on the northeastern side of Mount Minthi, above the village of Minthi in Ilia. Built in the 12th century, this small but strategically important fortress played a decisive role in the history of the region, especially during the Frankish rule. The Franks called it “Bucelet” or “Buceleto”, while it was one of the main fortresses of the Barony of Karytaina.

The castle stands out for its characteristic wall structure, which follows an irregular trapezoidal shape. Although its area does not exceed 800 square meters, its location offers stunning views, making it almost impenetrable. Access to the top is possible mainly from the west side, and there you will find the remains of the old water tanks, which served the besieged, as well as the foundations of a tower that once functioned as a guesthouse.

Araklovo Castle is associated with stories and legends, such as that of Godfrey de Brier, who captured the castle by trickery, fooling the Greek garrison commander under the pretext of an illness. These fascinating stories make the visit even more interesting, while hiking up the steep mountainside offers an experience full of adventure and enchanting images.

If you love nature, history, and medieval narratives, Araklovo Castle is a destination worth visiting. Even though today the castle is in ruins, the charm and history that surrounds it will win you over immediately.
