It also took its name from him. This in itself makes the monastery one of the oldest in Greece and one of the main centers of religious tourism in Gortynia and Lousios.

Hidden high on a steep rock, the Old Monastery of Philosopher He faced centuries of difficulties. But he did not give up.
And in the 17th century, its fame peaked: the monastery became a school of study, a powerful spiritual center in the Lousios Gorge.
One of the most important schools of the time operated here — the famous "Hidden School" of Lucius.

✦ Priests, teachers, and even future fighters passed through its desks.
✦ Education and Greek letters continued to live on in the most difficult years.

Later, around 1691, the New Monastery of Philosophou, closer to the trail and more easily accessible to visitors.
Thus, the two monasteries — the old and the new — became twin centers of faith and education for all of mountainous Arcadia.

Their premises house valuable frescoes, ancient ecclesiastical art and memories from centuries of monastic life. Some of the rarest documents of the monastery, as well as of the Monastery of Prodromos, are preserved today in the Public Historical Library of Dimitsana — another link in the large intellectual network of the region.

To get to the Old Monastery of Philosopher, you walk on a path through the canyon, between plane trees and rocks.
Every step is a step back in time. It gives you the feeling that the landscape remembers.
And just like in the Monastery of the Forerunner, here too the faith continues.
OR New Monastery of Philosophou It remains active, with monks keeping the flame of centuries alive — the same flame that was once cultivated in letters and souls.

For me, the Philosopher's Monastery is the definition of a spiritual retreat. A place you don't just visit — you experience.
It fills you with pride for our history and admiration for those who kept it standing.

Together with the Monastery of John the Baptist, they form the core of religious tourism in Lousios and two of the most powerful symbols of the Peloponnese.

Distance from Andritsaina: 32 km.

[33
post-349","religious-sites","type-religious-sites","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","region-33
["GET
