Nicolopouleios Library

Here in beautiful Andritsaina, in a town that looks like it came straight out of a postcard, lies a true treasure trove for every lover of knowledge: the Nikolopouleios Library. If you think that libraries are just shelves full of books, get ready to change your mind! Here, every corner and every volume tells a story that unites culture, history and the future.

A Library with Heart and Soul
The history of the Nikolopouleio Library begins in 1840, when Konstantinos Agathofron Nikolopoulos, a visionary scholar, decided to make a unique donation to Andritsaina. Think about it: a man who lived in Paris, among intellectuals and revolutionaries, chooses to send his entire library – thousands of volumes, rare and precious – to his father’s small mountainous homeland. Why? Because he believed in the power of knowledge. Because he knew that Greece needed educated citizens to move forward.

A Treasure of Books
The library's collection is no ordinary collection. It includes over 40,000 volumes, 8,000 of which are so rare that they are small works of art. Old books with leather and parchment covers, with handwritten notes from people who read them centuries ago. Think about it: holding in your hands a volume that was printed 400 years ago. This is not just reading – it is time travel.
And as if all this were not enough, the library also houses plaster casts of the frieze of the Temple of Apollo Epicurius, a donation from the British Museum. A wonderful way to connect the spiritual heritage of the region with this unique archaeological treasure.

Journey Through Time
The library, from humble beginnings in a warehouse next to the church of Agia Varvara, went through many difficulties. For years, its precious books were in danger of decay and oblivion. However, thanks to the residents of Andritsaina and the support of the Greek state, in 1930 it became public and in 1998 it acquired the impressive neoclassical building that houses it today.
