The Ancient Lycosura

Ancient Lycosoura, located in southern Arcadia, is an archaeological treasure trove full of myths and history, ideal for lovers of exploration and ancient Greek heritage. It is considered the oldest city in the world, according to Pausanias, and was founded by the mythical Lycaon, the first king of Arcadia. The city is located on the slopes of Mount Lycaeus, which was a sacred mountain, thus connecting the area with important religious cults.

The Sanctuary of Despoina is the most important attraction of Lykosoura. Despoina, daughter of Demeter and Poseidon, was worshipped in a Doric temple, where there were colossal statues of Demeter, Despoina, Artemis, and Anytus, works of the Messenian sculptor Damophon. These sculptures are unique in ancient art and in combination with the other buildings, such as the water tank and the long portico, create an atmosphere full of awe.

If you are in Andritsaina, Ancient Lykosoura is about 25 kilometers away and is an ideal destination for a day trip full of archaeological interest and natural beauty. The location offers stunning views of the Arcadian countryside, while the legends and mystical atmosphere of Mount Lycaon complete the experience. You definitely don’t want to miss the opportunity to explore the city that the ancients believed was the first to ever see the sun!
