Temple of Apollo Epicurus
The Temple of Apollo Epicurus in Vasses is one of the most impressive and mysterious monuments of antiquity, often called the "Parthenon of the Peloponnese". Built in the 5th century BC by the famous architect Ictinus, the same architect who designed the Parthenon, the temple impresses with its architectural complexity and its strong symbolic significance.
A God Who Saved a People
The temple was dedicated to Apollo, the god of healing and light, when the inhabitants of Figaleia were faced with a devastating plague epidemic. Legend has it that Apollo saved them, and to honour him, the Phigaleans built this magnificent monument in a remote and imposing spot, at an altitude of 1,130 metres, surrounded by the mountains of the Peloponnese.
Architectural Magic
The temple is unique in its architectural structure, as it combines elements from three different architectural styles: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. Inside the church is the first known Corinthian column in history, while the famous Ionic frieze, depicting the battles of Amazonia and the Battle of Centaurus, was removed in the 19th century and is now on display in the British Museum.
