When you are in Andritsaina, amidst the picturesque alleys and stone mansions, you discover that history and faith come alive in every corner. One of the most exciting spiritual experiences you can have here is a visit to Agios Therapontas, or “Agiotharapos” as the locals call him. This church is not just a monument of faith; it is a living part of Andritsaina’s history, full of myths and reality, a testimony to the spiritual past of the region.
A temple with centuries of history
Tradition says that Agios Therapon is the first church built in Andritsaina by Cypriot refugees in the 10th century, led by Andrikos Mourmouris. This connection with Cyprus and the refugees of the Middle Ages fills the place with a sense of historical significance, supported by well-known historians such as Kosmopoulos and Tselalis.
The temple has survived wars, natural damage and disasters, such as that of 1826, when Ibrahim destroyed the church, only to be rebuilt by the devoted residents.
A cruciform church with a magnificent view
“Agiotharapos” is located in one of the most beautiful locations in the region, at the southwestern tip of Andritsaina, in the Mourmoureika area. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking view – your gaze reaches as far as Liodora, Gortynia, and even Erymanthos. It is as if you are embracing the entire mountainous Peloponnese with your gaze from a point full of peace and history.
The church is an architectural jewel. Built in a cruciform style with a dome, it has characteristic Corinthian columns and walls over 1 meter thick. Its structure and its durability over time testify to the craftsmanship with which it was built and renovated. The last major renovation took place in 1953, thanks to the generosity of Angelos Pringouris, who wanted to honor his priest grandfather.
A journey of faith and memory
Beyond its architecture, Agios Therapon was the largest of the five parishes of Andritsaina. Its history is inextricably linked to the local community, while every aspect of the church invites you to discover not only the religious tradition, but also the endurance of faith throughout the centuries.
If you are a history buff or a believer, Agios Therapon is an experience not to be missed. It is not just a visit to a temple – it is a journey back in time, through your own roots, to a place that combines history, architecture and religious tradition in a unique and deeply moving way.
